While standing on the sidelines at soccer practice, two moms were discussing how to encourage their kids to read. Soon four or five parents were in a heart-felt discussion about reading, education, and life.
As I tuned in to their musings with the trained ear of an educator and bookseller, I heard many of the concerns we've all heard before: " Will my child learn enough from school?" "Will my child pass the reading tests?" And so on.
Yet the part of the conversation that caught my attention was as a mom. Each and every parent there, whether an avid reader or not, expressed the hope that their children would have the opportunity to learn about the world through reading. Learning about history, fixing the kitchen sink, solving a mystery, or planning a trip to the East Coast. How can we encourage our kids to read?
Model, model, model.
- Take the time to read the next chapter of that great adventure novel before bedtime, even if your child is a terrific reader.
- Pull out the cookbook next time you're baking and read through the recipe. Remember, once upon a time you didn't know it by heart either.
- Do a crossword puzzle together.
- Read along as your child checks out the latest on the National Football League in the sports section.
So, when your child's favorite topic pops up this week, take a moment to read a bit about it with them.

What’s New Review
Stink, The Incredible Shrinking Kid
Megan McDonald
Paperback 4.99 Level N
Stink has arrived! We met him in his sister’s now familiar series, Judy Moody. In this introductory tale, we find that Stink is just as fun and adorable as Judy. Not only has Stink learned to handle his irrepressible sister, he’s up to a few antics of his own. And in this his first chapter book, he has to face the prospect that he may actually be shrinking.
With plenty of illustrations and a fast moving storyline, this is a fun story for those newly independent or reluctant readers. It's also an excellent read aloud for kindergarteners as well. |
